Education is a fundamental human right.

BuildOn gives impoverished communities access to that right.

Currently, BuildOn is working to promote literacy, gender equality, and independence in Haiti, Malawi, Mali, Nepal, Nicaragua, Burkina Faso, and Senegal. To do this, our organization works with the country's department of education in a way that no other NGO does. The community where the school is being built signs an agreement that states both genders will attend the school in equal numbers. The community also promises to provide school supplies, teachers, and salaries. This prevents the community from becoming dependent on BuildOn for resources. BuildOn provides the engineering, skilled labor, materials, and project supervision to start the school; the community ensures its continued success.

543 BuildOn schools are currently in use around the world. They are attended by over 80,000 children, parents, and grandparents. 49% of these students are female. This is particularly important because BuildOn is giving women the chance to become educated and meaningfully contribute to their communities (often for the first time). And if a girl completes primary school, her chances of getting HIV/AIDS falls by half. For every year of school a girl completes, her children are 90% less likely to die before age 10. Currently, 1 in 5 adults are illiterate (2/3 of these being women). BuildOn ensures that these adults are able to read, write, and do basic arithmatic in addition to covering topics like hygiene, health, and agriculture.

Lewis and Clark College's BuildOn chapter is fundraising to build a school in Haiti this year. Each member of the chapter must raise $2,000, 100% of which goes to the construction of the school. Every cent of your donation goes directly to helping impoverished Haitian men, women, and children create better lives for themselves.

What will your donation do?

  • $1 buys a brick toward building a classroom.
  • $16 provides a space in a clean, safe classroom for one student to learn for one month in a developing country.
  • $68 provides an essential chalkboard for a classroom.
  • $377 provides the opportunity for literacy, math, and basic science education for one child in a developing country.
  • $500 empowers an entire village by sponsoring a class focusing on literacy and rural development for village adults.
  • $4,250 provides desks and chairs for an entire school.
  • $10,000 funds one classroom in a buildOn schoolhouse in a developing country.
  • $32,000 changes an entire village. Give children and adults, boys and girls a chance to alter the course of their lives through education by funding a schoolhouse. It will provide a clean, safe environment for literacy, math, and basic science education.

Your donations supplement our other fundraising activities, which so far have included a silent auction and raffle. More events are in order. Thank you so much for your generosity!

Lots of love,

Jess
