Hello all!!

My friends and I are planning a trip to Malawi, Africa, in the spring/summer  of 2018 to work with buildOn, an organization that "works in some of the economically poorest countries on the planet to build schools in villages that have historically had no adequate school structure."  I truly believe that every child, everywhere deserves an education.

As participants for this cause, the Colorado team will travel to Malawi and be fully assimilated into the community in which we will be building the school--we will live with host families in their huts, we will eat the food that the hosts prepare for us daily, we will learn about the culture, and we will work alongside the village people.  We will spend our days working on the initial building of the school; while we are only there a week, the funds we raise will be enough to enable the villagers, along with buildOn representatives, to complete the entire school.

As a teacher in the U.S., I have dedicated my life to bettering our own education system.  I am filled with joy everyday I step into work.  My kids, I believe, feel like school is a second home, a place where they can be challenged and be comfortable at the same time.  It is a place they can get away from the stresses of harsh home lives, or see their friends and widen their opportunities in life.  I truly believe that EVERY child deserves the chance to be a part of an education system like this.  The first step in this process is providing a location for students to receive this education...which is exactly what we will be doing.

Thinking in the long term, building a school not only provides a community with a facility in which children can be educated, but it also provides jobs for people in the community to operate the school, which is an incredible opportunity for people living in some of the poorest parts of the world.  There is also a lot of evidence supporting that girls’ education is one of the first, and biggest, steps toward progressing as a society as a whole,.  In BuildOn schools, half of all students are female.   Though this is normal in the U.S., in developing countries, this ratio is very large.  I am so happy to support more than just building a school, but building a better future for kids, and their societies.

I am writing to you to ask you for support in this endeavor I am taking on with the rest of my team.  As individuals, we are working to raise around $7000 a piece.  If you visit the buildOn website, you may see that the anticipated cost for building a school is approximately $30,000; as a team, we have set our goals high in order to better enable us to travel to Malawi, and donate any extra money to buildOn to support them in all areas in which they are building schools.  I would like to ask you to consider donating to this cause, as it is one close to my heart.  The donation process is fast, easy and secure!
